initializing sound banks for JV-2080

I'm having a hard time programming the names for my Roland JV-2080 expansion cards into Logic's named sound banks. The last time I did this someone from tech support had to talk me through it. I've just spent all day going through the Pro Reference help guide but I'm still confused. I know the hard way is to type in each patch name manually, but I know there's a way to assign the names from the expansion card automatically - does anyone know how to do this? My only other option is to spend several hundred dollars for an Apple Care protection package so I can call tech support. Any info would be much appreciated.

The easiest way is to grab the SoundDiver beta.

Add a JV2080 from the install window, and in it's special parameters, enable each expansion board you have.

Now you can double click on the 2080 to open it's memory manager, and all the names of the contents of the expansion boards will be there. Simply select a bank, copy to the clipboard, then in Logic, paste the names in to the bank you want.

Or you could try and find listings of these cards on the net and format them in a text editor, to paste them into the Logic multi in the same way.

If you tell me what expansion boards you have in which bank, I could do it for you if you get stuck.

Thank you both for respoding so quickly.

I watched both videos and they are very helpful, but they don't address some specifics I am having problems with (i.e. concepts of 'audio instrument' vs. 'midi instrument', which I am more confused about after watching the videos)

Finding patch lists isn't a problem, because I have those. But I can't seem to successfully copy and paste them into the banks. I goto bank 14 and select "paste all names" (which I have copied from the patch list in my word processor) but the names get pasted to bank 6 instead! (This happens consistently - is the fact that it's always bank 6 indicative of something?)

Another problem is that I've got four new expansion boards I need to initialize and I've already filled 14 of the 15 banks available in my JV-2080 multi-instrument. I can't figure out how to spread the new expansion boards to the next multi-instrument...

Man - this is a headache and a half!

'audio instrument' vs. 'midi instrument'

Well let's start there. An "Audio Instrument" is a class of an audio object, and it's displayed in the environment as a regular audio channel, with a fader, input and output, inserts etc. It lets you insert an instrument plugin in it's input, and receives MIDI data which plays the loaded instrument plugin, the audio of which is played to whatever output is selected.

A MIDI instrument is simply an environment object that takes incoming MIDI data (optionally processes it) and sends it on either to it's cable output, or to a MIDI port.

So if you have an external synth (say, Virus) connected on MIDI Port 1, on MIDI channel one, you'd create an instrument object called Virus, and specify Port 1, Channel 1.

Now with that object selected on an arrange track, the MIDI in your regions will be sent through it, and out to MIDI Port 1 on channel 1, and your Virus would play the notes.

Finding patch lists isn't a problem, because I have those

Ok.

But I can't seem to successfully copy and paste them into the banks.

Er, not sure what's going on there, I've never had a problem pasting in names - it's difficult to say without seeing what you are doing. You can always copy banks of names between banks anyway.

Yes, that's a little more tricky and has been a limitation of Logic for some time. Thre are ways around it that involve some environment work, but if you're a newbie at that it might be tricky...

Hello, I have quite a few racks and boards that I have connected via midi to Logic 7. I want to be able to get the names of the patches into the Logic sub channel Multi- instrument window. Funny thing is my older racks somehow have their patch names in the window but I can't remember how they got in. I have newer racks and boards that I want to add. They're already connected in the environment. Now bare with me because I'm TOTALLY in the dark about how to do this.I read on another message you needed word processing software to import something. Please explain to me what I need, where I may be able to get it, and after that slowly walk me through how to do it. Your help would be much appreciated. Have alot of work 2 do and this holding me WAYYYY back from progress. So your quick yet thorough response is appreciated.
