Maybe. It is a data connection as well as a power connection. Some types of files can be transferred.

What kind of files did you have in mind? (photos, music, text files, spreadsheets, etc.)
What version(s) of iOS do you have on your iPad(s)?
What version of macOS do you have on your iMac?
Primarily interested in transferring photos. I find I can email them back to myself, but I hope there is an easier way.
My iMac is running 10.13.3 and my iPad mini is running 11.2.6 iOS.
I use Image Capture. It's a simple drag and drop operation. An iPhone would be treated like a camera where the camera roll is available.
