We each have our own icloud acct. we each have same email on the email app. she upgraded her phone today and she was adding contacts and I saw them on my phone and she saw mine. any help is appreciated

Check in Settings > Accounts & Passwords > ACCOUNTS on her phone and one of your devices. Do they have an account in common that is marked for "Contacts" on both devices?
Appreciate the reply, we are sharing an email account and we do have several contacts in common on purpose.
If you are both syncing contacts with the same email account, then you will both have the same contacts... So what is it you don't understand?
Don't share an email address.
We didn't have this issue on her old iphone but she added a few text contacts for her and they showed up on my contacts
That's because you are both syncing contacts with the same account. Stop doing that if you don't want it to happen.
