Apple TV is meant to be connected to an HD or 4K TV. There would be no reason to do so with a Mac as the content is already available. If you want to stream content from a Mac to a connected Apple TV you can do so using airplay or home sharing.

it's hit or miss if a usb ir receiver would work with the mac remotes in terms of the functionality of the older macs which case with remotes
