Can I safely reformat a 3.5 IDE/ATA drive (out of a G4 I don't have) hooked up to my 4.1 Mac Pro through a Newer Tec USB drive adaptor?

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), 22 GB RAM

In Disk Utility, the drive should shows its make&model aka hardware-name, and a reasonable non-zero capacity/size.


If it does, you can repair, erase and re-initilize the drive for re-use.


If not, it is dead to you for this use.
