14 days is the industry standard for big ticket electronics. It's also your responsibility as a buyer to clarify that upon purchase should you be on the fence about any aspect of your purchase. You're definitely free to attempt to sell it privately to attempt to recoup your losses. Just be sure to follow these directions before it changes hands.
I got the iPhone X when it first came out and tried it out for a few weeks and found that I absolutely hate it. I feel like it was falsely advertised as far as the size; it was a comeplete downgrade after my iPhone 7 Plus. Everyone thought the iPhone X was going to be as big as the plus editions. I tried to get used to the fact that it didn’t have a home button, but it just doesn’t feel right. I gave myself 2 weeks to feel it out and realized it wasn’t for me. The Animojis and the facial recognition wasn’t even worth paying so much more for this small iPhone. I tried to return it to my carrier service and they told me I was 2 days past the return period of the 14 day limit. I’m extremely unhappy with this phone and I don’t feel like people should be stuck paying for a product they don’t want. I’ve had an iPhone since the 3G but I think after having this phone and not being able to get a different iPhone after only 14 days (it couldn’t be at least 30 like most products?!), im going to veer away from Apple at this point.

When my Android (insert word here) the bed, I went into an Apple Store and bought a 6S. Found out I could not get used to the 4.7 inch screen but still loved the iPhone. Before the 14 days was up, I exchanged it for a 6S Plus and paid the difference. This was listed as "Buyer's Remorse" on the return form.
7 months later, I returned to the same Apple Store and bought an 8 Plus.
So for the OP, his "rant" definitely has no basis in reality.
All retailers have a period for returns.
14 days is the standard.
your feelings have no basis in reality.
How long should they allow?
It cannot be unlimited.
Two weeks is standard and certainly reasonable.
Why can’t you return an iPhone after 14 days if you don’t like it?
