iCloud storage

My iCloud says documents stored in the top level of my iCloud Drive folder take up 2.5GB.

When I open my iCloud Drive folder it is empty. So why does 'Manage storage' of iCloud tell me otherwise?

MacBook Pro, macOS Sierra (10.12.6)

I hope that is not how iCloud works otherwise it is very flawed!

iCloud tells me that my iCloud is empty on one hand and that is has half full on the other. Such a confusing system.

Can Apple tell me which of these messages is true? And if i have used up 2.5GB please can i see it so I can decide of I need to delete it?

It's possible the content in the root of your iCloud Drive is a type you don't have a compatible app for.

Say you had 2.5GB of Microsoft Word docs in the root folder. If you don't have an app on your Mac that reads Word docs, they would not be visible on your Mac, but take up space regardless.
