cannot format external hard drive OS 10.13.3

Trying to format a WD 1TB external hard drive (formatted with Windows) with MacBook Pro via the erase command and with Apple Mac OS Extended (Journaled) selected in disk utilities did not work. The disk title disappeared. An error message said "not enough memory".

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2.6Ghz,2Gbyte

Western Digital will not format to Mac OS Exteneded (journaled) Hello Help! I have a brand new Western Digital 4T external hard drive. I am unable to format it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) when I click Erase. Tried several times and received the error message below. I even tried EXFAT, thinking I could change it back to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). But that didn't work either, as I received the same error message. Please help! It's driving me nuts! Thank you. formatting 1Tb external hard disk when i try to format a new 1Tb external hard disk from my MacBook Air running Mojave, i get an "unable to write last block" error. How do i solve this
