Not receiving text messages from my wife when phone is at home

In order to receive SMS text messages on an Apple Watch GPS model, your iPhone does need to be on and connected to Wi-Fi, as does your Apple Watch. If you have an Apple Watch Cellular and GPS model that is connected to the cellular network, you should be able to send and receive SMS text messages without the phone nearby.
