I have an iMac 12,1 late 2011. > 5 years ago, I have updated the memory from 4GB to 16GB. So currently have 4 sticks of DDR3 1333Mhz. I have recently tried to update the OS to High Sierra and it has been a disaster with the installation with the hard drive.
After performing a hardware test, this error code has come up: 4MEM/9/40000000 0X887d3718. Has anyone knows what seems to be the error for?

That message indicates that there is a problem with currently installed memory cards. Try reinstalling the original memory cards and updating again.
I recently had the same issue. What worked for me is replacing the RAM/DIMMs which allowed the hardware test to run without errors. Since then my Mini (2012) has been working reliably.
4MEM= a RAM error or a bad bank.
Try simply re-seating the RAM.
Try pulling one out at a time, and testing.
The idea is to try an isolate the culprit.
