What if nothing happens when I double click the avchd folder?

I used the Panasonic UX180 to shoot an event. When I copied the camera card to my MacBook Pro High Sierra, I can open the "private" folder and double-click the AVCHD file, which pops up a selector so I can choose a video clip to open.

On my friend's computer (can't remember the OS, he's not here right now), when I double-click the AVCHD file, nothing happens.

I tried right-clicking the file, -> show package contents -> then same thing on the BMDV folder, which leads me to a Stream folder with mts files in it. My friend's computer can't open these files in Quicktime (by double-clicking them) but if I right click and "open with VLC" they will play on his computer, perfectly.

What am I missing to get these to play nice with Quicktime?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)
