I am having this same problem. For example I click on Netflix. Instead of going to the Netflix main menu it opens up whatever I was watching last. Any action I then take in Netflix for example fast forward or rewind just takes me immediately to the main Apple Tv screen. Then I click on the netflix app again and it takes me back into netflix and the action has now been completed. Or for example I'm in Settings. I try to go "back" in the settings menu but any button press just takes me to the main Apple TV screen. I have to reset my Apple TV to get back to the main settings screen. Basically any time I try to take an action in an app it takes me to the main Apple TV screen. Then I click on the app again and when it opens my action has been completed. I disconnected my apps from the TV app thinking that was perhaps causing the issue but that hasn't seemed to have helped. If I restart the apple tv it will work normally for a while but then revert to any button press going to the home screen.

Hi,

Within the Apple TV Settings you can change what the 'Home' Button controls. Is it just any button on the remote? Do the volume controls still work as normal?

It sounds like you have a dodgy remote which isn't talking to the ATV in the right manner. Try taking both the remote and TV to your local Apple store and explain the situation. Because the remotes work off of Bluetooth, they should be able to hook your remote up to an instore ATV and test. If the issue is evident then we know the issue lies with the remote. If there is no issue then try a new remote with your ATV. If the issue still persists, its your Apple TV. They may do a full reset and reload the firmware back on or they could give you a new one if you're still under manufactures warranty.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. The volume controls on the remote still work as they should. Thanks to your reply it occurred to me to test using the Apple TV Remote app on my phone; when I use the remote app, the Apple TV functions normally as it should. So I do suspect you are correct -- and there is a problem with the physical remote control itself. However there is not an Apple store where I live, and I am now away from home for a month, so when I get home I will call Apple and ask them for help on troubleshooting the remote control hardware. I will post anything I learn here.
