can I operate a 85W MagSafe power adapter with a MacBook A1342 which is actually rated 60W without any serious consequences?

Should be perfectly safe. Some even recommend it, claiming that the power adapter will run cooler since it won't ever be at its maxed out current. The charging circuits in the MacBook will limit the incoming DC power to 60W anyways.
