Keep source picture files that have been imported or not?

I have 3 Apple Photo questions for Mac OS:

1) If I import pictures from a folder on my HD into Photo, are all the pictures now in the Photo Library file?

2) If yes, does that mean I can delete the original folder and files? Looking to free up HD space...

3) If yes, what if that one library file becomes corrupt; does that mean everything is gone?

Thanks

1 - Yes if you have the photos preference to copy imported items to the Photos library in its default, checked state - a manager library which is strongly recommended

2 - yes if you have a managed library

3 - no - it is NOT one library file, it is a package which is a special kind of folder and it uses the standard Mac file system and has all of your photos in it as standard files in standard folders which can be access using the finder - HOWEVER the package adds one level of security to the files by making it more difficult to accidentally move, rename or otherwise mess with them as making any change to the package contents cn corrupt it and cause data loss
