MacMini Late 2009 randomly restarting

Hello all,

My late 2009 MacMini is randomly restarting. I have been trying to understand if it's happening when I open a specific software or open a game such as FreeCell.
Last week there was a short power outage on in my neighbourhood and I'm also considering if this could have caused a particular problem.
I have already booted in the Recovery Mode and ran the Disk Utilities / First Aid / Verify Disk Permissions / and indeed there were some files that were successfully repaired via Repair Disk Permissions.

Do you have any other good idea of what could be causing this instability.?
Thank you very much indeed.

Here are two panic reports:

To help troubleshoot your Mac, I would suggest that you consider using EtreCheck and posting the resultant report for us to review. (Note: The EtreCheck reports does NOT contain any personal information.)

  • You can download EtreCheck from here.
  • Start EtreCheck from a normal user account. Optionally, you can run it from a user account with Administrator privileges.
  • Select a problem from the drop-down menu to enable the "Start EtreCheck" button. Optionally, you can add comments on what issues your Mac is experiencing, especially to aide others with similar Mac issues.
  • Click on Start EtreCheck
  • Allow the program to run to completion.
  • When done, select Report from the left-side window to display it.
  • Select the "Share Report" icon.

    Select Copy Report

  • Paste the report to your reply post.

Thanks for posting the report. It looks fairly clean. The one telltale area is the very last section under Diagnostics Information. There were three events that occurred on 3/13:

  1. There was a kernel panic caused by an unknown third-party device driver. These drivers would appear under the Kernel Extensions section of the report ... but I don't see it for yours.
  2. One was due to a power loss. Per chance did you experience a brownout, or lightning storm on this date?
  3. The last one was with syspolicyd, which is related to the Gatekeeper security process built-into your Mac. This process was designed to prevent installing or running apps that may be harmful, or at least, ones with potential security issues. You enable what level of protection Gatekeeper uses from the System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General tab > "Allow apps downloaded from" option.

Small backup drive - Time Machine backup drive is too small.

Unsigned files - There is unsigned software installed. They appear to be legitimate but should be reviewed.

certainly make sure you back up your personal files / data if you don't have it (ie, on memory stick)

did you try using time machine to restore a backup from before that event?

(an apple time machine backup may not be as valuable, because it may be your disk image that is causing issues)

have you (re)-installed the latest update?

Are you running as administrator? Avoid it. You should have a non-administrator user and use that for "normal work".

*** Have you logged in as Guest (you may need to log in as administrator and use Settings to allow guest login) or tried creating a NEW USER? These provide a fresh page for software run on, and often solve issues, which indicates you need to look into your user account as the cause (ie, ~/Library). This is something you shoudl probably try first, because it's easy and quick, before resetting nvram or restoring backups.

Sometimes software holds things that can cause lockups in /Users/you/Library. In this case, it could be an app that got "zapped" was unable to save properly to ~/Library and is now malfunctioning when running.

have you a backup (you may need to restore ~/Library because it DOES contain some personal data of yours), you can delete* ~/Library and apps will all start as if first time run. (rather than delete - you should simply rename the folder and create one called "Library")

These two sites have wonderful short and easy walk through for most any problem you'll ever run into with Apple products.
