Empty trash window won't close

After successfully emptying the trash, the "Are you sure you want to permanently erase the items in the Trash?" window won't close. I have tried clicking both "Cancel" and "Empty Trash" and nothing happens. When I restart the computer, the window closes, but emptying the trash again yields the same result.
