Help! Last upate has hosed my Mac

My MacBook Pro worked fine Friday afternoon. Over the weekend, I got a message to restart to install an update.

Now I get "osinstall.mpkg is missing." I ran a disk check and the disk is fine.

How do I get my Mac working again?

How do I turn updates completely off so this doesn't happen again?

Thanks!

Sounds like the installer is either missing or damaged. You could restore from your Time Machine backup as Lanny suggested, but then the update won't get installed on your Mac (and it will likely take much longer since your hard drive will get wiped and your Mac will have to clone your entire backup onto its hard drive). What I recommend doing is booting Recovery Mode, then choosing Reinstall macOS. (You won't lose any data and your hard drive won't get wiped) Choose Macintosh HD as the target volume, and wait for macOS to be reinstalled on your Mac. The latest update should automatically be included. If all goes well, your Mac should either end up at the login screen or log into whatever user is set up with automatic login.
