my silenced phone didn't let a call through even though I allowed calls from contacts

Had my phone silenced but settings to allow calls from contacts but it didn't ring.

Did you have the side Mute Switch on or were you using Do Not Disturb. If you used the Mute Switch, even calls from contacts will not ring.
