Kernel Panic Help

I have a late 2009 27" iMac with a SSD installed, 16gb of RAM. Never had any issues up until a couple weeks ago. Kept getting kernel panics, and the computer acts really strange. Can't boot into safe mode, tried to repair disk permissions via recovery mode, but it says the disk can't unmount itself. Got techtools to perform hardware tests, my computer doesn't have the AHT for whatever reason, RAM and everything else is good to go. My SSD is coming on 3 years old. I had some issues with Safari a few days ago when it wouldn't even open itself. I'm thinking it could be something in there, but I'm not for certain.

I also tried clean my mac, and smart reporter to check the SSD in case it's failing, but everything checked out. I'm thinking it could be a possible logic board issue, but I'm not too sure. I've tried just about everything I can on my end to see what's going on, but no answers have been found yet. Here's a copy of the kernel panic I had, if anyone can help me decipher it, I would greatly appreciate it.

Has this happened more than once? It's now March but the panic log you posted is from December.

A Troubleshooting Protocol to Identify Problems or Fix macOS El Capitan or Later

You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.

Be sure to backup your files before proceeding if possible.

  1. Shutdown the computer, wait 30 seconds, restart the computer.
  2. Disconnect all third-party peripherals.
  3. Resetting your Mac’s PRAM and NVRAM
  4. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
  5. Reset your Startup Disk and Sound preferences.
  6. Start the computer in Safe Mode. Test in safe mode to see if the problem persists, then restart normally.
  7. Use Apple Hardware Test to see if there is any hardware malfunction.
  8. Repair the disk by booting from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list. Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
  9. Repair permissions on the Home folder: Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder.
  10. Create a New User Account Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and enter your Admin password when prompted. On the left under Current User click on the Add [+] button under Login Options. Setup a new Admin user account. Upon completion log out of your current account then log into the new account. If your problems cease, then consider switching to the new account and transferring your files to it - Transferring files from one User Account to another.
  11. Download and install the OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Combo Update or 10.12.6 Combo Update or Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.3 Combo Update as needed.
  12. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.
  13. Erase and Install OS X Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  2. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.
  3. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's toolbar. A panel will drop down.
  4. Set the Format type to APFS (for SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  5. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  6. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  7. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

If none of the above helps then make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple.

Sorry, that was my error. At this point, I suggest backing up your files, if possible, erasing the drive, then installing a fresh copy of macOS. This involves what is described in my earlier post as Step 13. However, because you do not have a working Recovery HD you will need to start by doing a fresh install of Snow Leopard.

Snow Leopard Erase and Install

If possible be sure to back up your files.

  1. Insert a Snow Leopard DVD into the optical drive and restart the computer.
  2. Immediately upon hearing the chime hold down the C key.
  3. Release the key when the Apple logo appears and wait for the loading to finish.
  4. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities' menu. After Disk Utility loads select the out-dented disk entry from the side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive size.) Click on the Partition tab in the Disk Utility’s right window. Set the number of partitions to one (1) from the drop down menu. Click on the Options button and select GUID, click OK button, set the format type to MacOS Extended, Journaled. Finally, click on the Apply button.
  5. After formatting has finished quit Disk Utility. Continue with the OS X installation and follow the directions.
  6. When the installation has finished the computer will restart into the Setup Assistant. After you complete the Setup Assistant you will be running a fresh installation of Snow Leopard. Open Software Update and install the recommended updates.
  7. If you are planning to sell or give your computer away, then do the following: After you reformat your hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard, the computer restarts to a Welcome screen. To leave the Mac in an OOTB (Out Of The Box) state, don't continue with the setup. Instead, press Command and Q keys to shut down the computer. The Setup Assistant will guide the new owner through the setup process after he/she turns on the computer.
  8. Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. if needed. It is not needed if you are selling or giving away the computer.
  9. Go to the App Store where you can download macOS installer for your computer. Read this first: How to download macOS High Sierra.

It was from this morning, you can see the date at the top of the panic report. I tried steps 1-5 with no avail. I tried to boot into safe mode but it froze at the Apple screen, with the load bar below at max with no activity. For whatever reason I can’t access the AHT, it won’t boot up for me. I reinstalled OSX a couple weeks ago, but didn’t do a full erasing. Also tried to boot into recovery but had an issue where the drive wouldn’t unmoint to do a disk first aid. I have no clue what’s going on, usually I can figure it out, but having issues pin pointing the problem.

Mar 12, 2018 3:24 PM in response to Kappy

Thanks for your help Kappy, I used to work at a Mac repair shop doing hardware repairs mostly, but never did much software except for my own computers. The OS I’m running is from a 2010 laptop that I copied and am running on my Mac. I think somewhere along the line the recovery portion of the OS didn’t get copied over or something else happened. I’ll wipe it and restore, and hopefully that will solve the issue.

Mar 12, 2018 3:32 PM in response to indisguise13

The Recovery HD of macOS (Lion and later) is installed at the time the OS is installed on a freshly and fully erased disk drive. It lives in an invisible and special partition at the end of the macOS volume. Each Recovery HD is only able to restore the macOS that installed it. If you cloned an existing system from a drive containing a Recovery HD but did not use Disk Utility, then the clone will not have a Recovery HD. Only Disk Utility installs one automatically. If you use SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone an installed system then any Recovery HD is not copied. CCC can create one but only if there is an existing drive connected that has a Recovery HD of the right version.

Managed to get a snow leopard disk, and reinstalled it. After upgrading to 10.6.8 I was able to upgrade to El Capitan, then finally High Sierra. Then I proceeded to load my time machine backup. After it completed I got a “no entry” symbol when it booted up. It went straight to recovery and I tried to re install HS, but it said “cannot create a preboot APFS volume.”

I then deleted the entire drive and went to restore from TM backup, and the same thing happened. Currently, I deleted the drive again in disk utility, and formatted it to OS X journaled. After this I ran the time machine backup again and this is where I’m currently at.

Have I skipped a step or forgotten to do something? I’m not sure why I’m running into this issue, as my time machine backup was from High Sierra.

Mar 14, 2018 10:59 AM in response to indisguise13

You should not have loaded your entire Time Machine backup. You should only restore your files from the Time Machine backup. These folders, only, from your Home folder: Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Library, Movies, Music, and Pictures. As for the disk drive you use APFS only on SSDs. All other formats can be used on HDDs; the preferred format is Mac OS Extended, Journaled.

By restoring the whole backup you installed an older, non-functioning version of macOS over your newly installed, working version of macOS.
