I need to delete errors that have shown up on my mail . I think that if i delete mail I will accomplish this - can
still get the msgs on my IPAD so the problem is with the mac.

Is this an POP or IMAP mail account?
On the Mac you can drag and drop the email to the trash w/out opening, or swipe to delete
Use Mail on your Mac - Apple Support
on the iOS you can swipe left to delete w/out opening.
