When I go to sync my ipod my playlists aren't showing

When did they stop showing? Are the missing from iTunes when your device is not connected? Is all your media in your iTunes library and not just on the device?
If you library shows less content than it used to see Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash.

See Recover media from an iPod. You're lucky that your attempts to sync haven't deleted the content from the device. Recover it into an iTunes library and back that up. Then look at Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes on your computer using USB - Apple Support for details on how to set up syncing.

They haven't shown for a couple of years. My playlists show on the Ipod but not on the itunes site. and there doesn't appear to be a sync button anymore. I want to buy more tunes and add them to my Ipod in the playlists.
