My iPhone 6s keeps switching to silent all by itself, how do I stop it from going silent?

iPhone 6s, iOS 11.2.6

Hello marilynfromfayetteville.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

If I'm understanding correctly, you are having some trouble with your iPhone going silent. Being able to hear your alerts is important, and I will be happy to help.

Does the issue correct itself, or are you doing something which corrects this temporarily? Do you have a case on your iPhone? If so, the case might be touching your silent switch.

Let's check the silent switch as follows from our article: If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker

Check your sound settings

If your device has a Ring/Silent switch, move the switch forward—toward the device's display—so that orange isn't showing.
