Trying to install Windows 8.1, I get the folder with question mark after partitioning and auto-restart.

Hi there,

I am hoping someone on the forums knows a potential solution to this problem.

I am trying to install Windows 8.1 on my 2010 MacBook Pro running High Sierra 10.13.3.

Everything seems to be working just fine, except when trying to install Windows. There's nothing wrong with any of my hardware or hard drive. I try to install Windows using the Boot Camp assistant, the process goes just fine. Boot Camp Assistant partitions the hard drive, but then attempts to restart, and then displays the grey screen with the folder with question mark, "?".

I have tried restarting the computer afterwards and holding the option key, but the Windows partition is not shown, just the bootable Windows DVD I made from the ISO file on Microsoft's website. After I get the folder with the "?", I just cold boot and restart, hold option, and select my hard drive and Mac OSX boots up, and runs just fine. I have tried this process twice.

It just seems like such a simple problem. Can anyone help out?

Thanks,

Jessica

Can you post the output of

sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

Your 2010 Mac only supports legacy BIOS. High Sierra has known partitioning issues on older Macs. If you get a permission error, you will need to

  • Boot into Local Recovery using Command+R during boot
  • Click on Utilities -> Terminal, and run
    • csrutil status
    • csrutil disable
    • csrutil status
  • Boot normally, and re-run the same command

This will disable SIP, which we can re-enable, once Windows is fully installed.

The disc mounts correctly. In finder on the left hand side that shows all your folders & hard drives, mounted USB drives, etc, there is a disk labeled "BOOTCAMP" with nothing in it. Below are the results of the Terminal command.

Output of csrutil status:

System Integrity Protection status: disabled.

I have turned it on and off again with csrutil enable/disable. Currently its in the disabled state. I tried another install this morning, and got the "?" folder after restart again. I reboot and hold the option key and select "FixedMe3" which is the drive where OSX lives, my computer starts up fine.

Trying to install Windows 8.1, I get the folder with question mark after partitioning and auto-restart.
