Iphone X can't access home

Brand new iPhone X, day 2 and just had an issue with a iMessage notification coming up on the lock screen and immediately after a Twitter notification. The Message notification was blank but I was able to open it and use iMessage. Once I tried to go home, I was taken back to the lock screen. A blank iMessage was there that couldn't be cleared. I can not swipe up for home or partial for multitasker. I can swipe top right down to bring up quick tasks. Siri comes up and I can launch apps. I had to power down the phone and bring it back up. Is this a common issue? This is only my second day with it and I never had an issue before when my iPhones had a Home button.
