When you rip the CD with iTunes the files go into the location designated as the media folder in iTunes preferences. A CD just appears on the desktop like any other mounted drive. Dragging it to the Trash or clicking on the little triangle next to the CD in the sidebar should eject the CD after a few moments.

Thank you very much for your expertise and timely reply. I tried the suggested remedies, but it did not work and as I continued to import they continued to show on the desktop. I eventually shut down the Mac and when I restarted they were gone.
I appreciate your time and your trouble. May I call on you again if the need arises?
