Late 2011 MacBook Pro slow/laggy

My MacBook has been slow for years now, and it's really been irritating me lately that even just two safari tabs open with no other programs opened can get choppy and stutter. I don't think it was caused by updating to High Sierra or anything like that. I guess it could just be the hard drive or the ram amount, but I've used computers with 4gb of ram and an HDD before and they weren't near this slow to use for typical, common use case tasks like browsing the web. Maybe I should wipe the OS clean and start anew? Not sure, so any input is appreciated

Here's an EtreCheck report I just generated:

EtreCheck version: 4.1.3 (4A188)

Several problems:

At the top, the report indicates a corrupted file system. This needs to be fixed. If you have Disk Warrior and can run it from a second bootable hard drive, see if it can fix your internal drive. You can also let Disk Utility (running it while booted from a second hard drive) try to fix it, but it may not be capable of fixing the problem.

You don’t have enough installed RAM to run any recent OS efficiently. You need at least 8GB.

You are running High Sierra, which is not going to run well on a standard hard drive, especially not the slow 5400 rpm drive that came with the laptop. If you can revert to an earlier OS, you might want to do that, but you need more RAM and probably a SSD regardless.

You have Avast installed, which could be contributing to the sluggishness. Try getting rid of it.
