Stop iCloud downloading to my Mac

I would like to use iCloud like an external hard drive to just drop files into for storage. I do not need it to sync these files onto my mac as I do not have enough space.

When I turn on iCloud it automatically downloads my entire iCloud to my Mac.

How do I stop this and allow just uploading to my iCloud?

iCloud was never designed as a storage feature. It was designed as a syncing/sharing service to be used to connect all iOS devices using the same iCloud account. This User Tip may help, but it simply was never designed as an archival, off-site storage service. Dropbox is good for that:

You may want to re-think cancelling your plan altogether. If you back up your iOS devices you would want enough storage for that. And the newer devices' backups are often larger than the 5GB you get for free.

Best of luck,
