Why do the stores in my area (KC) have such a long lead time to get an appointment? In fact, there are no appointments currently available, I just want my phone fixed.

Right now it's the battery replacement program that creating unprecedented demand for appointments. However, if you can make it to a store, they have a longer window of availability - two weeks as opposed to the one week that's available online. Just ask who is the point person. Should be carrying an iPad Mini and possibly have a line of people waiting to check-in for their appointments.
