I have a first gen Apple TV and hear it will not work soon?

Access to the iTunes store directly on the first gen Apple TV will no longer be possible due to security enhancements on the store platform that are not compatible with the first gen.
You won't be able to buy music or rent or buy movies on it anymore unfortunately.
