new phone says itunes needs newer version cannot open

Bought a new iPhone 8 trying to open it up on my Mac book in iTunes but it says iPhone version of iTunes must be updated to latest version

The message is referring to the version of iTunes that you have installed on the Mac, not the phone. What version is it, what macOS verson is on the Mac, and what iOS version is on the phone ?
