Is EtreCheck a good program and Apple Certified?

i have an iMac and it runs like a bad PC with lots of programs in the background? With Windows, Ctrl+Alt+Del would pull of the task manager and you could see all the crap running? How do you do this on Apple? I'm a convert to Apple for 5 years...

Is this EtreCheck a valid program or just another internet junk program?

Or would you suggest I upgrade my RAM from the current 8Gb to 16 or 32gb?

Your RAM is not upgradeable. The RAM is integral with and soldered to the logic board--no RAM "slots." What you bought is your "forever RAM."

You purchased the entry-level iMac with very slow 1.6ghz dual-core processor, OK for a computer in a K-through-8 classroom but not capable of demanding tasks. It posted less than half the GeekBench score of the next option up, a 2.8 gHz quad-core that cost US$200 more. For an 18 percent increase in purchase price you would have gotten double the performance.

The hardware limitations restrict what you can do to help this one. And, in support of my esteemed colleague dialabrain and Jimmy, I run if I see GeekSquad coming.

if issues persist you should consider uninstalling PACE

additionally your system would benefit by replacing the HHD with an SSD

an FWIW "Apple Certified" means apple identified the developer, not that the program is any good. There a many great programs that are not Apple certified; and IMHO etrecheck is one of them.

And I'd say not reputable. Anyone who tries to charge you to "clean up" your Mac is either just after your money or completely clueless.

Just to add to dialabrain's comments, if you want quick access

Also, post the results of Etrecheck here and we can help see

Thank you Jimmy, very much for your response! Your'e the best!

Couple of more questions:

- when you looked at the Etrech report, how do you think my system overall is operating? Does it seem okay? Or does it require some things to be changed?

- does my RAM seem enough? Or would you suggest I upgrade my RAM from the current 8Gb to 16 or 32gb?

- in your opinion, does paying someone to "clean up" the mac, make sense? I meant someone reputable like GeekSquad from BestBuy, they aren't cheap though!

Mar 13, 2018 9:06 AM in response to dialabrain

About 10 years ago I was looking for employment anywhere and I was about to sign a NDA with them and the polices in that form were reprehensible. I did not sign it, it was entirely unscrupulous.

Anyway didn't GS just get called out for giving data to NSA?

If that system supports an aftermarket SSD get the SSD which would make a huge difference in speed.

There is no speed up, I would simply reinstall a clean instance of the OS on the SSD and migrate it over. OS X is designed to keep itself clean and anything you use to help that out is going to inevitably cause problems.

Allen is correct, the CPU is a bottleneck but IMHO any speed you can squeeze out of it is going to be adding the SSD, but I'm not entirely sure what hardware was put in that system that an end user can take apart.

OWC SSD Upgrade Kits for 21.5-Inch iMac (2013 - Current)

Mar 13, 2018 10:54 AM in response to FinTechInnovation

High Sierra is part of the problem, also, since you have an internal hard drive rather than a SSD. Going back to Sierra would help, but I'm guessing you have no backup of your previous system.

Before installing any major OS upgrade, you should have a full backup, preferably a bootable clone of your working system on an external drive. A bootable clone can be created with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
