A way to stop sync a folder from iCloud to Mac?

I've uploaded 25GB of files to iCloud from my Mac to save some space on it and want to access these files on iPad for example. But I don't need them all or mostly on my Mac.

Is there is a way to stop automatic downloading a folder from iCloud to Mac in an event of the space being available? Mean we can use .nosync additional extension on a file or a folder to disable uploading these to iCloud. But maybe there is a way to do a reverse thing?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)
