Can highlights be _temporarily_ turned off in an iBook?

I know how to permanently delete one, some, or all the highlights in an iBook. But sometimes they’re incredibly distracting when re-reading, or especially when someone in my family wants to read for the first time a book I’ve read and have highlighted. In Kindle, one can have highlights on or off without permanently deleting them, but this doesn’t seem to be the case with iBooks. (At least I haven’t been able to find it with a 5-minute Google search.)

Please someone tell me I’m wrong!
