Clips from iPhone black in Final Cut Pro 10.3.4

So I see from Apple that my iPhone 7 movie clips cannot be imported into FCPX 10.3.4 (or iMovie, for that matter) and that I have to upgrade to 10.4. Thing is, that requires me upgrading my OS to Sierra, which I can't yet do because I am using some software which is not compatible with Sierra. So what the heck??!!! Am I now not able to import my iPhone movies for editing on my Mac? That's crazy. Is there a work around?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11), 3.4 GHz, Fusion drive

I believe so, but I just used my iPhone, which now uses that. Not sure there is any choice. I did just find a workaround though. Import into Photos app, which reads the files just fine, and then export. It then creates h.264 files which can be edited in Final Cut. So there you go. Not sure if there is any generational quality loss, mind you.
