how to work with external device on macbook air

hi, i copied my items from macbook air to external device hard disk.. but now when i access it to other machine of dell it doest open .. whats wrong i m not able to understand.. how should i back up my items to external device so that i can access my files and photos saved to external device on any other laptop. please suggest.

MacBook Air, macOS Sierra (10.12.6)

Windows cannot read Mac files without third-party software such as MacDrive. If you are backing up your Mac then you should do so to a drive formatted for the Mac. If you wish to transfer some of your files to a Windows PC then use a separate drive formatted FAT32. The Mac can read and write to a FAT formatted drive. However, if you transfer files to a PC they will need to be in formats you can use with a PC app.
