iMac as external monitor inconvenience

I am using my older mid 2011 iMac an an external display with my new iMac. It works fine, but the need for a 2nd keyboard so I can press command f2 is not ideal. Is there a way to force it to open as my external display when I turn on my new iMac?

I remember in the past when I could use another 27-inch iMac to my imac 27-in by pressing "command F2". But there is no "F2" button on the macbook pro keyboard! Any idea?
