display drive icons on mac desktop

I want to display internal and external drive icons on my Mac Mini Desktop - OS 10.13.3. I've searched for answers, tried every option I can find, including finder preferences, but nothing works. Why can't I get this to work? And why isn't there a Mac OSX High Sierra discussion group?
