FCPX crashes when importing Raw video

I am using a Mac Pro (Mid 2012) with 2x 2.4 GHz 6-core Intel Xeon processor, 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Memory, ATI Radeon HD 5770 1 GB Graphics card and it is running MAC OS High Sierra 10.13.3.

I have 260+ GB of space on the main HD, 347 GB on HD2, 422 GB on HD3 and an external drive i use for rendering to with 3.15 TB of space.

I use a SONY PMW-EX1 XDCAM EX FULL HD camera that uses SxS Pro cards with 16 GB on them. The files are recorded in the generic file format that the camera uses which involves MP4, SMI, PPN, XML and BIM labeled files for each recorded track on the flash drive. I haven't a clue what all that means but i think essentially it is proprietary files that boil down to being an MP4. It is 1920x1080 and MPEG-4 Video, Linear PCM, 2 audio channels, although once imported it looks like FCPX converts during import to a MOV file in its libraries.

To import the files off the card i use a SONY SxS memory card reader/writer that is a USB 2.0 device.

I have the latest version of FCPX installed on my system. It has been working fine up till about a month ago. Now, every time I open it and want to import files off of the flash card from the camera, as soon as i put the card into the card reader FCPX crashes and then tries to start back up. It tells me it crashed and then i say report it or just OK...either way it starts back up and then crashes again if i keep the card in the reader. It will continue that cycle until i take the card out of the reader at which point it starts up and then when i put the card back in the reader to import, it crashes again.

Again this has been working just dandy for years...and now this. Nothing has changed. The current operating system has been in place for months. How can i fix this??
