multiple monitors

I am trying to connect two HP P223 monitors to a Mac Book Pro OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.16

I bought a Mini display port VGA, HDMI, DVI, DP 4 in 1 Adapter and I also have a Mini Display port to VGA port.

I tried to connect the Mini Display port to VGA port (which is fine for one monitor) then connect the DP to each monitor (thinking that would work but it did not), connected the DP and VGA into the 4 in 1 adapter which also did not work. I am lost as to what to do or if this will even work. The system does not detect the other monitor....and there is no button for detection...Please help.
