Hello lindaofmccarthy,

If you forgot you passcode or tried to type it several times unsuccessfully, you must restore it. If you used to connect it into a computer, when you plug the lightning to usb cable to the iTunes it will show your device, and you can have your data backed up. If it's not possible, you can erase it with iCloud.com/find or using a computer with iTunes.
