Question:

Question: from

I have asked this question before and got a response from Eric Root and followed his suggestions. I am still getting beachballing and a poor performance from the report. What else can I do to get this machine up to speed? Here is the current report:

One issue that I see is that your Mac is running numerous daemons, agents, and Internet plug-ins and Safari extensions. Are you sure you really need them all?

Regardless, I would suggest removing the following from your Mac:

  1. TechTool Pro
  2. CleanMyMac 2
  3. Mac Cleanser
  4. Silverlight
  5. Multiple ad blocking plug-ins. I suggest that you choose one or use none at all.

Additionally, you may want to consider performing a complete Time Machine backup and a clone of your Mac's drive. Then perform a clean install of macOS. Run your Mac or a few days to see if this help. It should. Then add back just those applications, plug-ins, etc. that you really need.

Suggest you also uninstall CleanMyMac 3.

You have so much 3rd party software installed that is supposed to 'protect' your computer, I'm not surprised you have performance problems. The below are some examples.

[Not Loaded] DeviceSentry.kext (5.1 (710))

[Not Loaded] DeviceSentryCR.kext (5.1 (710))

[Not Loaded] NetBlockade.kext (5.1 (710))

[Not Loaded] NetworkSpyAlert.kext (5.1 (710))

I agree with the above suggestion for a clean install and I suggest you install the minimum required 3rd party software.

The OS has built in software protection and all your 3rd party protection software interferes with normal operation.

Along with the suggested removals (no one needs that many Safari extensions), CleanMyMac and all other such garbage apps are known to remove files they shouldn't. You know. Unimportant stuff like system files.

Once you remove the garbage from your Mac, reinstall the OS.

Firstly, thank you for all of your suggestions. Using Super Duper, I have a bootable clone of my present system. Before I do anything stupid, I ask if this is a good course of action: Use the clone as a startup disk. Erase the entire HD on the machine. The next part I am not so sure of. After erasing the HD, do I simply install a clean OS of High Sierra on the HD and then restart and with installed applications on the new system and then add the ones I want from the clone by copying them from the external HD to the clean install? Thank you for helping me resolve this problem. Tom

See this article macOS Sierra: Erase and reinstall macOS

After that don't install third party applications / softwares , any apps like clean my Mac , anti virus , try to keeps extensions as off , in users and groups keep login items as empty .

SuperDuper! doesn't work that way. If you do a clean install and then use SD to copy/clone the external drive back, you will end up back where you started from. System files that may have been removed by CleanMyMac will be gone again since that's what SD is supposed to do - match the target drive to the source. It will change, add or remove files as necessary to achieve that goal.

Complicated apps such as Photoshop can't be simply dragged from one Application folder to the other. There a lot of other files and folders it installs. Many not that obviously named.

Installing the OS on an erased drive and then adding all of your third party apps from their original source disks or purchased downloads is certainly the best way to go for an overall squeeky clean drive. It's just time consuming to do all of that. And, you have the external clone to use as your regular drive while you rebuild the internal.

But, if you want to try speeding up the process, once you have your external clone and you've tested to make sure it's bootable, startup to the normal drive again, dismount and turn the external drive off. Do as much cleanup as you can per what's been mentioned above, then reinstall the OS from Recovery mode. Still a fair amount of work, but a lot less time than an entire rebuild if you have a lot of apps to reinstall, plus bringing all of your data back in, such as your emails, settings and other documents.

The erase and reinstall the OS is a good start, but reinstalling applications from the clone may or may not work. Applications that are self contained (all parts of the application are contained when you copy over the application) will work. Some 3rd party applications may have to be installed from scratch. Since you aren't restoring the full clone, some applications have files in parts that aren't being restored.

Really! Reinstalling applications like Microsoft Office will damage the system files and OS? I didn't know that. If I reinstall Adobe Acrobat Pro, that will damage system files and the OS? If I install the latest version of Quicken, that will damage system files and the OS? Based on what you posted, no third party software can be installed. Apple should shut down the App Store based on what you posted.

Microsoft is a genuine source , and if the user has purchased the licensed version from renowned apple store then its ok ( App Store applications are all outsourced and these apps can be broken or not compatible with Mac ) , I can not speak more about it .

Yes " always "if the user wants the Mac to be trouble free no third party apps in Mac .

I'm sorry but that sounds a bit too extreme. Even Apple will recommend some third party apps. And, third party software is mentioned in the SLA. As well, I've run third party software for years without a single problem.

Any senior advisor who suggests such a thing is, bluntly, an idiot.

If we're supposed to take that at face value, then let's start out by saying you will have to stop using your Mac entirely since what's underneath the GUI is (a now heavily modified version) of the open source BSD Unix OS. So, the entire OS is built on top of "third party" software.

What about the CPU and its support chips, or the firmware in your SSD and graphics controller? Apple didn't write a single line of code for any of those. Does that make them untrustworthy?

I do prepress work for a living. What does Apple have that would do the same work I can accomplish in Photoshop? Hmm. The only item would be Preview. Laughably useless in comparison. Page layout? All Apple has is Pages, which is a cross between a word processor and a page layout app. It's most glaring downfall? It doesn't understand CMYK - at all. Any such image you drop into Pages is automatically converted to RGB. Totally, 100% useless app for the printing industry. We'll work with Pages documents when they're sent to us, but the first thing we do is convert them to InDesign or Quark XPress (there's them darn third party apps again!).

Oh, and delete just about all of the fonts installed by the OS. Most are supplied by Bitstream, Microsoft, and other third party vendors.

This list could go on for pages and barely scratch the surface of very usable and essential third party apps there are no Apple alternatives for. Basically, you're saying I shouldn't get any work done. Or, take the hardest, slowest way around as possible to do something, if you can do it at all.
