Question: iCloud and messages

Ever since I got a new phone a few months ago, my macbook air (previously connected to iCloud) has disconnected from iCloud and messages. I finally got the macbook to sign in to iCloud today, but it still won't connect to messages. I tried going to preferences under messages and signing into my apple id but every time it doesn't work and says "an error occurred during authentication." Please help this is super annoying 🙂

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

You are welcome. If they are working on the phone, it may not be an Apple ID problem. It is worth checking with support.

Can you log into Messages and FaceTime on the phone? Can you log into FaceTime on the Mac?

Messages – Can’t log in

Messages – Can’t log in 2

Messages - If you can‘t sign in to your iMessage account or FaceTime on your Mac

Message activation error

Have someone else attempt to sign in using their Apple ID. If they can successfully sign in and use Messages/FaceTime, it may be your Apple ID.Someone I know had this happen and I was able to sign in usingmy Apple ID. After a call to Apple Support and then being elevated to a tier 2 support person, it turned out it was a problem with their Apple ID. It took the software engineers 3-4 days to fix the problem. When calling Apple, make sure you tell them it is an Apple ID problem so you don't get charged.

Thanks for the response! I have no issue using iMessage and FaceTime on my phone with my apple ID. My macbook refuses to sign in on imessages and FaceTime. I tried using someone else's apple ID to sign into FaceTime and it worked immediately. None of the solutions in the links you posted have worked so far so Ill have to contact apple support. Thanks for the heads up on clarifying it as an apple ID issue!
