You can reset your iMac user account password using the Password Reset Assistant in Recovery Mode. Hold down Command-R while you restart (or turn on) your Mac. Release the keys when the Apple logo and a progress bar appear. When the Utilities menu appears, go to the very top of the screen and click on Utilities, then choose Terminal. Execute this command:

resetpassword

The Password Reset Assistant will appear. Use it to reset your user account password.

Hope this helps!

Uh oh... this isn’t good. If you forgot your password, and if you don’t know the password to any other users on your Mac, and if you forgot your recovery key, you’re busted. Your only option is to erase your hard drive and reinstall macOS.

Did you back up your Mac using Time Machine? If you encrypted the backups, do you remember the password that you set for those backups? If so, you can restore your data using Time Machine. Boot Recovery Mode, then choose Restore from Time Machine. You’ll be guided through the steps of restoring your data from your backup drive.
