USB keyboard stops working after shutdown unless mac book pro is off overnight.

If for some reason I shut down the macbook pro, my USB keyboard no longer works. I have to shut down the laptop and leave it off overnight. When I start it up it usually restores the keyboard. It has happened since day one. Is there anyone that might know what I need to do without leaving the laptop off overnight each time? The keyboard is always plugged into the left side of the laptop USB port. The other side has a hub plugged in and has a printer and time capsule in that hub. They work fine as soon as the laptop starts up. By the way, if the keyboard is unplugged from the laptop after it was working, I have to shut down and leave it off overnight to get it to work again.
