how to update an i phone without signal catching hardware

My brother gave me his older i phone but,the signal catching hardware from the sim card i tried to install latest software update to it but it was not successful then i tried it from itunes but it says error when updating firmware now the iphone is on recovery mode only and i give it to repair but they are saying no completable hardware
