PPPOE (modem) with DHCP or PPPOE setting on a Mac network setting ?

Hello,

I am currently in Australia, and subscribing internet services ADLS+ via PPPOE, and I find pretty odd that some modems e.g. Netgear which needs me to input the PPPOE login/password of the ISP with the modem and on a Mac using DHCP configuration, however some of the modem e.g. Draytek and TP-link, they need me to input PPPOE login/password for the modem, and my mac's network setting instead of using DHCP, I need to create PPPOE service.

Do I miss something ?

In order to make a PPPoE connection, you need to provide the network login credentials somehow.

Your Mac is perfectly able to provide those for you, but the preferred method, IF and only IF the device is smart enough, is to give them to the device and tell it to remember them.

Some folks are using a modem on a Router to make the connection. In that case, the Router can typically remember the credentials and present them every time you need to re-connect. Some Routers can also log in repeatedly when needed to simulate an "always-on" connection.

If you can make such an "always-on" connection, you tell your Mac you are connecting via Ethernet (DON'T specify PPPoE), and it assumes you have a permanent connection like the ones provided by corporate infrastructure or other "always-on" connections. A cable-modem is similar.
