What can be done about duplicate contacts?

It seems that every time there is an upgrade to the operating system (ios) some, but not all, of my contacts are duplicated, triplicated, or quadricated (sp). If I go through all 600 entries and eliminate the copies, the same thing happens the next time ios is updated. Frustrating!!!
