Different header on left and right pages?

I have been trying to create global footers that are different on even and odd (or left and right, if you prefer) pages. We do a magazine using Pages, and I'd like to have different footers.

The Pages approach "seems" to be splitting up sections (which I already do) and using different headers/footers. I've done this, but now each page has it's own independent footer. If I go back and change one even page footer I want all the event footers to update.

Is this even possible in Pages?

The problem is that pages can be disconnected, so a change to the header or footer ONLY reflects the header or footer in that section. Now, starting from scratch with blank pages, I have created a file that does indeed have a different left and right header/footer, and changing any left one makes all left ones change, and ditto for the right. Perfect.

But, in existing documents, this appears to be impossible.

For the magazine, I create every page as it's own Section so I can move pages around. The only time a section is more than one page is when the article goes beyond one page.

I see how it works, but don't understand why it doesn't always work that way. In both cases (at the Apple store earlier today, and my experiment tonight), I can create this situation, but there doesn't seem to be a way to apply it to an existing 32 page document.

Thoughts?

You can't have it both ways. Pages can handle your desire to move a page from left side to right side (change it from odd to even, or vice versa) within a given section. But when a page is moved to a different section, it (Pages) would have no way of knowing whether you intended the existing headers to go with it, or for the page to assume new headers. If each page is a new section, there's no way to put two different headers (or footers) into that single page, and have Pages determine which one you intended to display, depending upon the side it ends up on.

It seems to me that you need to decide on your ultimate layout, detemine how many (and which) pages will be in what section, and place your headers/footers accordingly once the page order has been determined.

Hi Allen,

I'm not entirely sure that I understand your problem correctly... My guess is that it comes from having created a lot of different sections in your exiting document(s) that were then designed as a left or a right page. Thus they cannot easily change from one type to the other.

Is it you wish to move entire single or multiple pages (as distinct objects) around in your dokument like in PageMaker or the like...? They do, however create documents in a very different manner.

As others mentioned before it's easy to have "right/left" pages in a Pages document via the Layout inspector (if that is what it's called in English - I use the German version) and you can change that option for every section you created.
Now - could things be easier for you, if you deleted all or some of the "new section" marks (or whatever they may be called in English)? Thus when your text changes - gets longer or shorter - the right/left pages are adapted automatically.

In the layout inspector there is also an option that allows you to use the same headers and footers in the new section as in the one before - could that do the trick for you?

that's basically what I suggested in my first posting. I also wrote that this probably has to be done for every section, except when Allen follows your suggestion to delete all unnecessary section breaks.

You are right, of course! Seems, I had forgotten that when I got to the end of that thread and to the end of my reply (Alzheimer läßt grüßen 😉
