clearing space in icloud without loding imac docs

I need to be able to remove documents from iCloud WITHOUT LOSING THEM FROM MY IMAC DOCUMENTS FOLDER. Cant seem to do this without triple work . Going through system preferences and turning of Document syncing removes contents of Documents folder on my iMac. Seems backward to me. Hard drive contents should be safe. Help, thank you.

My iCloud Drive is full. macOS Mojave (10.14.6) and I am trying to remove Documents and Desktop from my iCloud drive and put them on my macbook drive. I went to Preferences>iCloud Drive>Options and unchecked "Desktop and Documents Folders." The alert says "If you continue, items will be removed from the Desktop and the Documents folder on this Mac and will remain available in iCloud Drive." That's not what I want. I want to stop syncing Desktop and Documents. I want the files to remain on the Mac and be deleted on iCloud. I am afraid to follow the directions in fear of losing everything. HELP please anyone. iCloud storage Documents folder There is Apple advice that, in order to save storage on e.g. MacBook Pro internal drive you move files to iCloud Documents folder. This does not seem to improve the situation. Despite having 1.9TB iCloud storage space, attempting to store a folder there, rather than on the MBP Desktop, produces the error, insufficient space. Going to Storage/Manage provides a graphic of the Macintosh HD that shows a Documents folder packed with files that should be only on iCloud (see attached screenshot). Confused, is there a definitive document that explains how to actually store in iCloud Drive, as opposed to sync? Thank you!

How do i delete documents from my MacBook Air and retain them in Icloud I have very little space left on my hard drive and see that 27gb is being used for iCloud documents. How do i delete these whilst retaining them in my cloud?
