System taking up 53GB

When I go to About this Mac>Storage, it tells me that the System is taking up 53GB of a 121GB flash storage.

This is in contrast with that other OS that only takes up 15GB.

Why is there such a huge difference in storage consumption, and is there anything I can do about it?

MacBook Air, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)

System Storage is at 65 + GB Trying to update my Mac iOS, but I don't have enough storage. I've deleted a ton of stuff but my system storage is taking up 3/4 of my entire storage...any ideas why this is so high?
